Barrington Electricity Aggregation Winter 2026 Prices

The BarringtonCommunityElectricity.com program is announcing new winter electricity supply prices to go into effect beginning with the November 2026 meter read (See Press Release). The program’s winter pricing for the default electricity will cost less than Rhode Island Energy’s residential supply, while continuing to offer 5% more clean energy from Rhode Island based sources.

The new prices will be fixed for six months through customers’ May 2027 meter read. Current participants do not need to take any action to remain in the program and receive the new pricing for the product in which they are currently enrolled.

The Town is pleased to confirm that participants will receive all bill credits recently announced by the Governor’s Executive Order and the Rhode Island Energy Hold Harmless settlement. These include a roughly $20 credit for residential customers for months January through March and a $14 credit beginning October 2026 (for a typical customer using 500 kWh monthly).

While the program’s supply prices, like that of Rhode Island Energy’s supply, are increasing this winter, the bill credits mentioned above will keep customers' total bills over the winter pricing period at or below their total cost from this summer.

The additional renewable energy in the program is sourced entirely from local Rhode Island projects, including the Narragansett Bay Commission wind turbines at Fields Point in Providence, solar in West Greenwich and additional wind turbines in Coventry. Program participants annually purchase more than 2544 megawatt-hours of voluntary renewable energy, equivalent to displacing over 1.7 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions.

This is a Town-operated program open to all Barrington residents and businesses. To join, complete the enrollment form on the program website: BarringtonCommunityElectricity.com or call the program’s supplier, NextEra Energy Services Rhode Island, at (877) 200-8619. Participants may leave the program at any time without fees or penalties.

New Trees on Lamson Road and Maple Avenue

The Town is exploring opportunities for new street tree plantings in the Lamson Road and Maple Avenue areas.

We are looking to hear from residents who may be interested in having a tree planted on their property near the street. In these areas, the existing right-of-way has generally been utilized for sidewalks, so potential tree plantings would likely be located on private residential property, with the property owner’s approval.

Areas of Interest:

At this time, the number of trees, specific planting locations, and timeframe are still being determined. This initial outreach is intended to identify residents who may be interested so that potential planting locations can be evaluated.

If you live on Lamson Road or Maple Avenue and would be interested in having a street tree planted on your property, please contact Brock Handy at bhandy@barrington.ri.gov.

Additional information regarding tree species, planting locations, and scheduling will be provided as the program develops.

Completed Sowams National Heritage Area Feasibility Study Presented to Barrington Town Council

After four years of research, community meetings and gathering support from nine municipalities in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, the 311-page Sowams National Heritage Area Feasibility Study is complete. A copy was presented to the Barrington Town Council on Monday, September 14th by Sowams Heritage Area board chair Andrea Rounds, vice-chair Laura McNamara and board member Tracey Dancing Star.

The Feasibility Study examines whether the communities on the northeastern shore of Narragansett Bay should be federally designated to preserve and share a landscape of national consequence. Spanning 140 square miles and anchored by the ancestral homeland of the Pokanoket Tribe, Sowams is where two worlds converged, creating and then shattering a 50-year alliance that shaped American history.

The Feasibility Study also explains in five chapters why this compact landscape merits a place in the National Park Service system of National Heritage Areas. It documents a sweeping narrative that shifted profoundly in 1621, when the Pokanoket Massasoit Ousamequin welcomed Plymouth’s settlers, endured through a devastating war that reshaped Indigenous-colonial relations, and reverberated in later struggles over religious liberty, the business of human enslavement, and industrial innovation. Sowams, the study concludes, “is the setting for one of our nation’s origin stories… and ground zero for the fracturing of that alliance” whose legacy has molded American political, economic, and social life.

A digital version of the Sowams National Heritage Area Feasibility Study is available at www.sowams.org.
