Secretary of State Gregg M. Amore Statement on Supreme Court Ruling

RHODE ISLAND, August 25 - PROVIDENCE, RI – Secretary of State Gregg M. Amore today released the following statement on yesterday's Supreme Court ruling in Trump v. California:

"Voting by mail is a safe, secure, and convenient option for millions of voters each election. The Administration is intent on inventing reasons to sow doubt around mail ballots – even as the President takes advantage of mail voting himself.

I want to be clear: yesterday's Supreme Court ruling has no impact on primary election mail ballots, and it is yet to be determined if the elements of the Executive Order that impact mail ballots are lawful and implementable by the general election in November.

Yesterday's ruling lifted an injunction that blocked parts of the Administration's executive order based on procedural issues. As the ruling itself stated, "The Court's disposition of this application does not mean that any measure taken by the Government to implement the Order will necessarily be lawful. On that score, time will tell."1 The ruling does not preclude challenges to the merits or lawfulness of the Executive Order, and other legal challenges are ongoing.

Rhode Islanders voting by mail in the primary can be assured that their ballot will not be impacted by this decision. And I remain committed to doing everything in my power to ensure that mail ballots remain accessible for the general election and beyond. Under the United States Constitution, elections are run by the states – and we will continue to fight the federal government's overreach into your right to vote."
