Brown University Gunman has planned attack for months
Transcripts of the footage, captured by Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, 48, indicate that he spent “six semesters” preparing for the December 13 attack in Providence, Rhode Island. The Portuguese immigrant defended his actions in the recordings but did not offer any explanation for his motives.
Two days after the Brown University shooting, Valente killed MIT professor Nuno Loureiro at his home near Boston before taking his own life. The Providence classroom attack left students Ella Cook, 19, and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, 18, dead and nine others injured, prompting widespread shock and criticism over the time it took authorities to identify a suspect.
Investigators discovered the videos and the gunman’s body in a storage unit in New Hampshire on December 18, following a manhunt across three states. The footage, recorded in Portuguese, was later translated into English.
“Although Neves Valente stated that Brown University was his intended target, based on initial review of the evidence collected, he did not provide a motive for targeting students at Brown University or the professor at MIT,” officials said.
